What an Oman Family Visa Is

An Oman family visa lets an expat who already works here bring close family to join them. The Royal Oman Police (ROP) grants it, and in most private sector cases your employer signs the form for you. Two very different routes sit under the same name, and people mix them up all the time. The family joining visa, also called joint residence, gives your family legal status for two years at a time, while the family visit visa is a short stay for kin who are not moving here.

Picking the wrong route is the costliest early mistake, because a visit visa does not turn into residence later on. Work out first whether your relative is coming to live here or just to see you, because the papers differ from day one. Who Can Sponsor Family Members

Sponsoring an Oman family visa starts with your own status, not your relative's. You need a valid Omani resident card and a job the state treats as senior. The ROP says the sponsor must hold a senior job by GCC standards. You also need proper housing, and the lease must be in your name or your employer's name, so a lease in a friend's name will not pass.

Pay is the rule that causes the most argument, and the official ROP family joining visa page lists a monthly wage of not less than RO 600. Press reports over the past ten years describe lower limits for some groups, with cuts to OMR 350 and OMR 300 where a lease and pay slips are given. The figure used in practice turns on your job grade and the ROP office that handles your file. Treat RO 600 as the published rule, and check your own case before you spend money on attestation.

Which Relatives You Can Bring

The rules are tighter than most expats assume, because the joining visa goes only to an expat worker's spouse and to children below 21 years. That age limit is firm, and it is judged at the time your file is dealt with.

Spouse. Allowed on joint residence, so long as the marriage certificate is attested. A foreign wife of an Omani citizen also counts, with a Ministry of Interior letter that proves the marriage.

Children under 21. Allowed on joint residence. Each child needs an attested birth certificate that proves the link to the sponsor.

Children aged 21 and over. Not allowed. They need a student visa, their own work permit, or some other route in their own right.

Parents and siblings. Not allowed on joint residence. The state service list puts parents, siblings and other kin under the family visit visa.

Joint Residence Versus Family Visit Visa

Joint residence lasts two years from the date it is stamped in the passport, and it allows many entries, so your family can fly in and out freely in that time. Once stamped, each member gets an Omani resident card, which becomes their daily ID for banks, schools and health care.

The visit route is much shorter, and the official family visa listing on gov.om prices it at 30 OMR. It covers kin such as an expat worker's parents, siblings, or the relatives of an Omani citizen. It grants no right to work and no residence, and where a guest needs more time, a visit visa extension is listed at 20 OMR through the ROP.

One rule catches people out again and again. The service page says the sponsored person's own family, meaning their spouse and children, must live in Oman. Read that line with care before you apply for a parent.

Documents You Need, and What Must Be Attested

Attestation is where most files stall, and it is the part to start first. Foreign civil papers are not taken as issued, so they must be legalised through the issuing country's own channels, then stamped by Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Anything not in Arabic or English needs a legal Arabic translation from an approved office.

Passport copies. Your relative's passport must be valid for not less than six months.

Photos. The ROP asks for two photos at 6 x 4 cm.

Marriage certificate. Needed for a spouse, and it must be stamped by Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Start this months ahead, as attestation abroad is slow and cannot be rushed from Muscat.

Birth certificates. Needed for each child, attested the same way, to prove the parent and child link.

Proof of pay. Either a form approved by the Ministry of Labour with your job title and wage, or a bank statement of monthly pay transfers over not less than six months.

Tenancy contract. A copy of the lease, or another paper that confirms where you live.

Medical certificate. Adults from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Syria and Nepal must add a medical certificate approved by the Ministry of Health.

Signatory sheet. Private sector sponsors add the specimen signature sheet from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion.

What an Oman Family Visa Costs

The state fees themselves are small: the ROP lists 30 OMR for the family joining visa, and gov.om prices the family visa service at the same 30 OMR. A visit visa extension is 20 OMR. Being late is the costly part: a fine of 50 OMR applies for delay in renewing or registering the residence permit.

Resident card costs sit on their own, and the official resident card renewal service is listed at 11 OMR. Under Ministerial Decision No. 157/2025, the resident card fee is set at 5 Omani rials per year. A new card to replace a lost or damaged one costs 20 OMR.

Budget with care for the costs nobody quotes upfront. Attestation fees, courier charges, legal translation and medical tests often add up to several times the visa fee. One attested and translated marriage certificate can cost more than the 30 OMR visa.

How Long the Process Takes

The published service times look very fast. Gov.om lists about 7 minutes for the family visa service and 5 minutes for a card renewal. Those numbers cover the counter step once your file is complete and correct, not your journey from start to finish.

The real timeline is far longer. The ROP eVisa portal tells you to lodge any request at least 4 days ahead, and warns that times vary by case. Attestation abroad is the true bottleneck, and several weeks is normal. Plan on two to three months for an Oman family visa, from the first paper to your family landing in Muscat.

Renewing the Visa and the Resident Card

Joint residence runs two years and then must be renewed, while resident cards must be renewed within 30 days of expiry under the current rules. Miss either date and the 50 OMR fine for late renewal applies.

Renewal needs the old expired card, the renewal form, a worker data form and medical test, a letter from the employer, and the valid passport. Where the holder has a child, the original birth certificate is needed too. The holder must attend in person, so book the slot around school hours and work shifts.

Why Family Visa Applications Get Refused

Most Oman family visa refusals come from small gaps in the paperwork. By far the commonest is a marriage or birth certificate that was never attested, or one attested out of order. The paper must clear the issuing country's channels before Oman's Ministry of Foreign Affairs will stamp it. Doing those steps in the wrong order means starting again.

Proof of pay is the next most common cause. A one page salary letter is often turned down where the office wants six months of bank transfers. A child who turns 21 mid process is a third, and that one is hard to fix, while a lease in the wrong name is a fourth. Every one of these is caught by a proper check before you file.

Business owners sometimes find their own status is the real block. If you run a firm here and draw no salary, the job based route may not fit you.
